My favorite phrase from the October 2024 General Conference was taught by Elder I. Raymond Egbo, “trust Jesus with your child, for He is the strength of every parent…”
This past May I encountered two stories within the same the week, enabling me to see the similarities and inspiring me to declare the doctrine of Remember. So many parents worry about their child’s mortal experience along with their eternal salvation. This worry is understandably generated by the life choices of the child, but it important for us as parents to recognize when we are living in fear instead of faith.
The first story was shared by an older woman in my neighborhood:
Years ago when her daughter was a teenager, Mary was very worried about her daughter’s choices. One night Mary had a dream where she saw a deep ravine filled with rushing water, and there was a girl in water. The water was powerful and the ravine was too steep for the girl to climb out. Then Mary saw a man come, he picked the girl up and carried her safely out of danger. Mary woke up and thought to herself, “this must be Jesus coming to save my daughter”. It was another ten years before Mary’s daughter decided to start making better choices. Mary needed to wait upon the Lord, remembering the comfort she had received from this dream.
The second story was told to me by one of my best friends:
Annette was sitting in the chapel with two of her young adult children on Easter Sunday, when Annette looked over and saw her daughter taking a selfie while her son was playing video games. Outraged at their disregard for spiritual worship, Annette felt shock, shame and sadness. Later in the Easter service, as the choir was performing, Annette felt washed in the Spirit as the beauty of the music overwhelmed her. That was when the Holy Ghost whispered to her “They are feeling the Spirit too.”
I was absolutely overcome when I heard this story- we were in the middle of a fast paced walk and my body came to a stop, refusing to move. “Annette” I called out, to let my friend know I was stuck behind her, and couldn’t continue our exercise until I hugged her and cried because of my astonishment. Struck by the significance of this statement from the Holy Ghost, I could clearly see that heaven was not only aware of my friend’s thoughts and feelings in regards to her children, but also able to confirm the truth and power being experienced by her children. He has his eye on them, and I hope Annette will hold onto this moment, as she waits on the Lord.
Let us collect these moments from each other, and celebrate them!
